Glossary

(Average) duration of visits

Sum of visits' duration divided by a number of the visits.


Duration of a page view

This is a time elapsed from one page view until another page view during the same visit.


Subdomain

A part of domain. Examples: www.stat24.com and ranking.stat24.com are the subdomains of stat24 domain.


User conversion

User conversion is shown as a percentage; a ratio of the number of users who visited a particular subpage (e.g. with thanks for an order in the Internet store) to the number of all users who visited the website.


Loyalty

User's loyalty is the degree of attachment of a user to the website. The determinant of user�s loyalty is the number of visits made by the user in a defined time interval.


A non-cookie view

This is a view made by a user, whose browser does not accept cookies. Thus, non-cookie views are not assigned to particular users and are not taken into consideration as visits.


Catalogue

This is a set of website addresses grouped by thematic categories.


A number of visits

A number of visits made by users during a selected time interval.


Page

This is a document written in one of the varieties of SGML language (HTML, XML) downloaded from a local disk or a web server and interpreted on the side of a user by the browser. A characteristic feature of websites is hypertext and very often multimedia. Some websites may contain elements of presentations created by means of other technologies (e.g. Flash), some may generated dynamically upon request being sent to the server fro the browser.


Profiles of a visit

ZA set of pages viewed during a visit. The order of visited pages or a number of visits to particular pages are not of essence.


Referrer

This is an electronic document which brought the user to the monitored website.


Search engines - domains

Websites containing search engines.


Search engine

A system for searching web pages by keywords.


A visit

A sequence of consecutive page views made by one user on one website. An interval between consecutive page views cannot exceed 30 minutes.


A returning user

This is a user whose visit to the monitored website has been previously recorded.


Website

A set of pages forming a coherent entirety.


A new user

This is a user (cookie), who visited a monitored website for the first time.


Operation system

This is basic software facilitating computer operation. The most popular operation systems are Windows family systems. Less popular systems include MacOS and Unix-based systems: Linux, FreeBSD, SunOS.


Length of a visit

A length of a visit is a number of page views during one visit.


Width of a visit

A width of a visit is an indicator of penetration of a website by users; it is a ratio of a number of pages viewed by a user to the total number of pages.


URL (Uniform Resource Locator)

A code identifying any resources on the Internet. An example: http://www.stat24.com


A user (cookie)

This is a person using website resources, identified by a sequence of alphanumeric characters (cookie). An Internet user manages cookie files alone on the computer and may use many cookie files.


Number of views

A number of views made by users during a selected time interval.


IP addresses

A numeric identifier of a server connected to a TCP/IP network. The address is a series of numbers from 0 to 255 separated with full stops. For instance 36.192.55.234.


Keyword

A phrase entered in the browser, which brought the user to a monitored/targeted website.


Path of a visit

A list of pages viewed during a visit. This takes into consideration the order of visited pages as well as multiple visits to the same page.


Counting script

A JavaScript code which transmits information about a page view to stat24 system, after it has been read by the browser. Statistics are counted only if the script has been positioned properly.


Resolution

Resolution is the number of pixels viewed on the computer screen.


Internet browser

A program which facilitates searching and viewing websites. Examples include: Microsoft Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Mozilla, and Netscape Navigator.


A referring page

This is a page which brought the user (cookie) to the monitored website.


A number of colours

This is a number of colours displayed on a screen and defined in a system. A number of colours is specified in bits.


Page view

An event consisting in viewing a page.


A cookie view

This is a view made by a user, whose cookie has been recognized (if the visit to the page is not the first visit).


Visits' conversion

Visits' conversion is shown as a percentage; a ratio of the number visits to particular subpage (e.g. with thanks for an order in the Internet store) to the number of all visits to the website.


Conversion

Conversion is an indicator of effectiveness of a website, which informs about the effectiveness of performance of projects, tasks and expectations to be performed by the website.


Number of users

A number of unique cookies used by the visitors to the website in a particular period.


HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol)

One of the protocols used on the Internet. HTTP protocol determines how are the data formatted and transferred or what actions the servers or browsers should perform in reply to various messages. A disadvantage of HTTP is statelessness i.e. it does not record earlier events e.g. page visits.


Domain

A unique name on the Internet, identifying the IP address. A domain address is the most often used address to enter a website. In the url address of a website, it defines the server, which stores the website. A suffix of a domain address defines the main domain, to which the website belongs. For the pages registered in Poland, the main domain is .pl. An example of a domain in a Polish main domain: stat24.


Internet user

A person, who during recent 30 days made at least on page view on the Internet.


Cookie

The series of characters is sent via server to the browser during a page view. The series is sent back to the server (and possibly modified by it) each time the browser downloads an appropriate page. The cookie enable recognition of a user during subsequent page views. The cookies may contain individual page settings etc., which is sometimes seen as violating the privacy policy. Cookies do not allow collecting the information from the user's computer.


Duration of a visit

A sum of page views' times accounting for one visit.


The (average) time spent on the website

This is a total average time spent by the user on the website within a selected period of time. Unlike in the case of the statistics, while calculating the average time of visits, all the user's visits are taken into consideration.


Administrator

This is a person who sets up an account and has the right to manage it via the interface.
